Belgium’s Doel 1 nuclear reactor was permanently disconnected from the electricity grid this week after 40 years of operation, operator Electrabel stated.

Belgium’s Doel 1 nuclear reactor was permanently disconnected from the electricity grid this week after 40 years of operation, operator Electrabel stated.

Recent tests revealed tens of thousands of additional cracks in the problematic Doel 3 and Tihange 2 reactors, which will remain shut down. Further results of material tests are expected in April, according to the Belgian nuclear safety authorities.

The 1 GW Doel 4 reactor has been brought back online after it was also shut down this winter following an act of sabotage in 2014....
