Chubu, Osaka sign up for US LNG

Japanese utilities Chubu Electric Power and Osaka Gas have signed off on a binding agreement to buy 2.2 million tons per annum (mtpa) apiece from the planned floating Freeport LNG plant in Texas, the buyers announced on Tuesday.

The agreement locks up half of the Macquarie Energy project’s liquefaction capacity, which is expected to become available in 2017. India’s state-owned Gail is also rumoured to be preparing to close a deal for 2 mtpa for 20 years which could be worth $12 billion.
