Estonian politician Kadri Simson has been given the energy portfolio in the new European Commission, which will be led by former German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen. Von der Leyen and her team are due to take office on 1 November, assuming all the proposed commissioners are confirmed by the European Parliament before then.

The appointment of Simson signals the commission will continue to focus on diversification and security of energy supplies. Estonia – which joined the EU in 2004, more than a decade after...
