The profit margins for UK coal-fired power plants are at historical lows as the rising cost of carbon continues to push up variable costs while renewables keep gaining market share.

Coal has been squeezed out of the UK power mix by increasing output from renewable sources, higher coal prices compared with gas, and rising prices for EU carbon allowances. Meanwhile, gas has defended its market share in the UK, government data for Q1 shows.
