A reported six-month delay to the completion of the Romania-Moldova Interconnector will weaken Moldova’s position as it attempts to renegotiate a long-term gas supply deal with Russia’s Gazprom.

Moldova’s current deal was struck in 2016 and expires in December, which is roughly when the interconnector was originally expected to come online. But according to a source close to the project, the pipeline will not be ready until at least mid-2020.
