A mild winter and nuclear restarts reduced Japan’s LNG demand in January 2019, with imports falling by 9% year on year, to 7.5 mt. It was only the second January in the past seven years for which imports were below 8 mt. Japan’s LNG imports fell by around 1% year on year in 2018 as a whole and could decline again this year as the country has more of its nuclear capacity online.
