China imported more LNG than pipeline gas for the third consecutive year in 2018. However, piped imports could begin to narrow the gap this year as incremental supplies from Central Asia may back out some LNG requirements amid a slowdown in the Chinese economy.

China imported 53.9 mt of LNG and 36.2 mt of pipeline gas last year, according to data released by the General Administration of Customs last week. This compares with LNG and piped imports of 38.3 mt and 30.4...
