Spot shipments of LNG from Qatar to Argentina are expected to slow in the coming months, despite favourable landed prices.
Argentina generally buys LNG on the spot market, and Qatar has taken advantage of this in 2016 as demand for the fuel in Northeast Asia has remained weak. The landed price in Argentina averaged $5.3/MMBtu in the first 10 months of 2016 compared with $5.2/MMBtu in Japan. However, weaker Japanese LNG demand caused Qatar to push more shipments onto the spot market. Consequently, Qatar shipped 0.97 mt of LNG to Argentina in the first 10 months of 2016 compared with 0.47 mt during the same period in 2015.
