Qatari LNG will continue to target price-sensitive customers in Southeast Asia, even though demand for the fuel in Asia remains weak.
Most of Qatar’s LNG exports to Asia are under long-term contracts, but Qatar is also increasing its presence in the South Asian spot market. Qatar is under pressure to renegotiate its long-term contracts with Asian buyers, which will encourage it to boost volumes in the spot market and those sold under short-term contracts. Almost one-quarter of Qatar’s LNG exports to Asia in 2015 were traded on the spot market. However, the corresponding figure was just over 50% for South Asia, helped by flexible volumes.
