The power sector will be a key driver for gas demand growth in markets where gains are likely over the coming months. In other large European gas markets, weakness from the sector is expected to pull down total gas consumption.
Italy’s gas demand could grow by around 8% year on year in Q3 2017. Hydro reserves in the country are low and this is expected to present an upside for gas-fired generation during the summer. The closure of power plants, including coal-fired capacity, in the north of Italy is also expected to provide opportunities for gas.
