Strong increases in spot buying have heated up the winter LNG market in Northeast Asia.

China’s spot LNG imports were up by roughly 43% on an annual basis in September and by more than 100% in Q3 as a whole. Spot supplies accounted for 25% of China’s LNG imports in Q3 2017 compared with 18% in Q3 2016. The increase in spot LNG imports has supported the country’s overall gas imports and helped drive up competition on the spot market, pushing prices well above the levels seen at the same time last year.
