The outcome of the United States presidential election will increase market volatility in the near term.
Republican candidate Donald Trump defeated Democrat contender Hillary Clinton in the race for the White House in November, a result that the market believes will cause political uncertainty. Republicans also control both houses of Congress – the House of Representatives and the Senate. However, several key Republicans have distanced themselves from Trump’s proposed policies, setting Congress on a collision course with the presidency. Trump will take office on 20 January 2017.
